One year after completing ' Jayamahal Clean-Up Drive'

'Jayamahal Clean-Up Drive' started in May 2013 and 6 months later, in October we had completed clearing debris, garden waste & garbage from every street in Jayamahal Extension and Nandidurg 3rd cross. We also planted a large number of tree saplings and conducted a Scientific Avenue Tree Survey and installed boards giving information, under 22 avenue trees. ( Unfortunately 14 boards were damaged because of which we had them removed and are in the process of installing them in the Jayamahal Park where it will be protected by fence / gardner )
All this was possible only with the co-operation of residents, volunteers who put in hundreds of hours of very hard work & the very generous donations by the residents.
We are also thankful for the co-operation and help received from the Corporator, Mr K M Gunashekar. Some foot paths were tiled by Mr Gunashekar and we hope he will take up work on the rest. BBMP supervisor Mr Manjunath has been the most important cog in the wheel ! He still continues to do his best to clean up the area but we hope he will be able to achieve ZERO GARBAGE ON GROUND with the active help and co-operation of residents.

We appeal to all residents to co-operate by the following do's and do not's :

Do's :
1. Do Segregate your garbage at home.
2. Hand over the garbage only to the BBMP 3 wheeler / PK
3. If garbage is not picked up please keep at home until it is collected the next day.
4. In case of continuous garbage pick up problem, contact Harish on 99802 26378
5. Hand over small amount of garden leaves daily, big cuttings can be privately cleared by contacting Harish / Manjunath

Do not's:
1. Do not instruct your maids / house hold help to dispose of the garbage. (they throw it on road / in drain)
2. Do not throw garbage into cijma bins. It is NOT for wet waste.
3. Do not leave debris from renovation near cijma bins. It is the resident's responsibility to have it cleared, BBMP will not pick up debris.
4. Do not leave your re-potted waste like mud and broken pots, etc on foot path. It is the resident's responsibility to call private debris pick up to have it cleared.
5. Do not leave any kind of garden waste on foot paths, drains or near bins.

Most important of all is for every resident to be pro-active. If each one looks after the stretch in front of their home then the whole area is taken care of !

Feel so ashamed of the resident who has done this !

Can any one tell us who has dumped their repotted garden waste near the Cha Cha park bins?

It is the duty of the resident to call a debris pick-up service and have it cleared from their home and NOT DUMP IT IN PUBLIC PLACES !

Bangalore's & particularly Jayamahal's Garbage Woes.

So ashamed to see this.... someone has dumped bags of debris near the bin !

One single day's garbage from Jayamahal, is like this. Imagine Mandur !!

Continuous vigilance, from 6 AM to 7 PM.
For 3 days, we stood there in the hot sun to prevent the BBMP sweepers and residents from dumping garbage on the road at the collection point and achieved 100 % ZERO garbage on the ground.

Now it's back to this - Cannot rid the roads of garbage, unless EVERY ONE does their bit !

Is this going to be a permanent scene of Jayamahal ? Are we just going to accept and live with this ?

Team CIJMA is continuously trying to get the BBMP & the garbage contractor to collect only segregated waste and has had many Door to Door campaigns to educate residents regarding segregation & disposal of waste.
A few house holds do segregate but the majority don't because they see the garbage being mixed up by the BBMP Pourakarmikas who come to collect it !
The Mandur Land Fill problem will never get solved as the BBMP still sees garbage as waste that should be "DUMPED" and not as "COMPOSTED & RECYCLED"
Have we turned so selfish that we don't care about dumping OUR TOXIC GARBAGE on the villagers, when we don't even tolerate a neighbour's tree shedding its leaves into our compound !

A lot of people complain that BBMP mixes waste they have carefully segregated at home right in front of their eyes. Yes, but follow that truck and see what happens. At some point further downstream, its contents will be emptied and re-segregated. That should set us thinking -why would anyone do that?
The answer is simple. BBMP contractors want us to think that segregation is pointless. Those who segregate are recycling dry waste themselves for money . They are also saving costs on gardening in their communities by composting the wet waste. Both of these represent real streams of money that were earlier available to the contractor. He took what he wanted and dumped the rest without reducing the billable quantity -so it really was a bonanza. Naturally, he wants to hang on to that gravy train.If we allow ourselves to believe that segregation is pointless, the contractors will win. If we persist and wait for the fight in the court and BBMP to be settled, and a lot of people are fighting hard to hold this line -then the city will win.
We need to keep faith in responsible solid waste management (SWM). It is the right thing to do, which is why the 'system' works so hard to prevent it from happening.

Once we realize that, we must become even more determined to overcome it.

We request every single resident of Jayamahal to SEGREGATE WASTE.
DO NOT DUMP near the bins.
Please hand over DRY WASTE (plastics, papers, cloth, tins, cans, etc) ONLY ON SATURDAYS.
WET WASTE (kitchen waste & small amounts of garden waste) will be collected EVERY DAY.

Clean-up of water body at Jayamahal Aane Park

We, the residents of Jayamahal are blessed with a beautiful sunken park with lots of trees and a water body.

Two days back, we walked into the park at 6.30 in the morning to see the dozens of water lilies in bloom. We were amazed to find a variety of wild water birds ! There were Barbets, Mynahs, Koels, Greenish Leaf Warblers, Sun birds, King Fishers, Pond Herons, Purple Moorhens and a host of others : )

The joy of seeing the Lilies & birds was marred by the amount of plastic bags, waste cloth, cans & all kind of trash in the water and on the surrounding rock : (

This morning under Manjunath's guidance ( BBMP supervisor ) 5 Paurakarmikas got into the water and collected all the trash. One and a half hours later, they had picked up carry bags, soft drink & pesticide cans, bottles, discarded clothes like pants, bed sheets, shirts, etc. They also found cooking vessels ( it's a wonder how all this stuff got into the water ! )
6 large bags of trash was picked up !!!

We appeal to the regular walkers in the park to keep a hawk's eye on the visitors & not allow any one to bring in food or plastics into the Park.
If only each one of us does our little bit to protect & preserve mother nature we can have little 'Heavens on Earth' in our own localities & back yards.
